"Word and Deeds"

We have a dog. His name is Nicholas. He’s ten years old, and he’s a Golden Retriever. To us he’s the best dog in the world. He loves to play and he loves to go for walks. He always seems to be in a good mood, and he’s friendly to everyone, especially children.

One of Nicholas’ favorite activities is to have his belly rubbed. In fact, often when we say nice things to him, like, "You’re such a good boy, Nicholas," he immediately rolls over on his back and looks at us with an expression on his face that says, "Do you want to rub my belly?"  What he’s really saying is, "Don’t just say you love me. Show me! Rub my belly!"

God is a little bit like Nicholas. For God calls us to not only say we love others. God wants us to show it. We "show it" with simple kindness, and by doing favors for others, and helping them. There’s a verse in the bible (I John 3:18) that says, "Beloved, let us love, not only with words, but with deeds." Love involves words and deeds.

Think about it, and let’s pray about it:
Lord Jesus, You not only told us that You loved us. You showed us, by how You lived and by all that You have done for us. Help us to follow in Your footsteps and to turn the love that is in our hearts into loving deeds done for others and for You. In Your Name. Amen.
