"The Right Words to Say"

Sometimes we just don’t know what to say. Have you ever felt that way? Most of us have. For life presents us almost daily with strange and new situations. And each situations requires different words. What do you say to someone you meet for the first time? What do you say to someone who is sad? What do you say to someone who is celebrating a very important day in their life?

Well, to help us we’ve developed special things to say, such as . . .
  "Nice to meet you."
  "Happy Birthday!"
"Merry Christmas! and Happy New Year!"
At birthday parties we even have a special song to sing, "Happy Birthday!" This song puts into words what everybody at the party is feeling. It gives us all a way of expressing what is in our hearts. And, best of all we can do that all together as a group . . . . by singing "Happy Birthday!" to the Birthday Boy or Girl.

Well, in church we have something similar. We have special words and special songs that help us. Our special words include the Lord’s Prayer, the prayer that Jesus taught us to pray to God. These words give us just the right thing to say to God. Words that we need to pray, words that God longs to hear. They’re just right.

We also have special songs - hymns that have been sung to God for centuries. Many of them are just the right words to say to God. They draw us close to God and close to each other as we sing them together.

What are your favorite hymns or songs that you sing in church or at Sunday school?

Let’s close with the Lord’s Prayer for it gives us just the right words to say to God:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed by Thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will by done, on earth as it is in heaven.
 Give us this
day our daily bread,
And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
