Call to Worship (adapted from Touch Holiness)

Leader: Let us rejoice, for morning has dawned.  A new day has been born, and we are newly alive to enjoy it.

People: We know the beauty of God’s creation and the wonder of the human family.  We remember those whose love has shaped our lives--and those whose struggle for justice has been unsleeping, even in nighttimes of loneliness.

Leader: We gather in our church to worship God, to sit at Jesus’ feet and learn from his teachings, to soak in God’s love, and to pledge ourselves to God’s work in the world.

People:  May God bless us, so that what we do in this time together may be honest, sacred, and filled with hope.

*Opening Hymn #444:  “Rain Down”

Call to Prayer and Confession:  (spoken by the Pastor):

Even when we have been too busy to notice, God has been constantly loving us and encouraging us to grow in the light of God’s love.  We can trust God with our deepest confessions, concerns, and celebrations.  Let us pray together.

Prayer of Approach and Confession (adapted from Touch Holiness):

Mighty, Gentle God you have shown us your love and called us to be your servants.  But sometimes we have made ourselves too busy and worried to notice.  Like Martha in the gospel story, sometimes we have been distracted and anxious about things that we cannot control, and we have forgotten you.  Sometimes we have been worried about what other people think of us, and we have missed the point of your care.  At times, we resent people like Jesus’ friend Mary, who act freely, sitting at your feet, soaking in your love.  Forgive us, O God, when we have worried over the wrong things.  Free us, body, mind and soul, for your service of love and grace.  Amen.

The Pastoral Prayer

Holy Scripture:  Luke 10:38-42 (page 62 N.T.)

Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home.  She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he was saying.  But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself?  Tell her then to help me.”  But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing.  Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.”

Sermon:  “Sitting at Jesus’ Feet”

*Closing Hymn #358:  “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling”

*The Benediction and Threefold Amen #744:  (sung by the congregation)

Thank you for worshiping with us today.  All visitors are invited to join us after church for refreshments and fellowship.  Summer is here, so weather permitting coffee hour is outdoors.  During the summer months, you’ll find our Welcome Table just inside Fellowship Hall in the entryway, with helpful information about our church.  We also encourage you to sign a pew card and place it in the offering plate and speak with our pastors.  Welcome!!

As the old hymn says, "Jesus calls us, o'er the tumult of our life's wild, restless sea," but he doesn't need a cell phone to do it.  Please turn your ringers off before worship.

Greeting you this morning are Lily and Grace Richard.

Coffee hour is hosted by Martha and Patrick Marshall.
