Text: Luke 9:18-36
There’s a story told about a Congregationalist who died and went to heaven. St. Peter met him and graciously offered to give him a tour. Heaven was such a gorgeous place, filled with generous and joy-filled people. Love exuded from the smiles and demeanor of everyone they met. Everyone had more than what they needed, and whatever they had they shared extravagantly with everyone else.

Text: Luke 4:1-13
A pig and a chicken are walking down the road trying to figure out their future. They needed a plan to get off the farm, and the chicken came up with an idea first. “Hey pig,” said the chicken. “How about if we open a restaurant. We know a lot about farming and we know a lot about food.”

I was raised in the Roman Catholic faith. I went to a Polish Catholic grammar school and an Irish Catholic High School. I was drawn to the Music Department and joined the Glee Club and Senior High Choir. When I joined the choir, it wasn’t for any religious reason…. I just loved to sing, it was FUN, AND I had a crush on the guitar player for the Folk Masses.

“Not From Away”
Introduction
I am Verlee Anne Copeland, daughter of Leola June Schaefer North, daughter of Elva Estil Morris Schaefer, daughter of Lura Dean Bailey, daughter of Sarah Schrekise Shaner, daughter of Barbara Baugher. When I called my 85-year-old mother this week to check on the names, she asked me why it mattered, why did I want to know? What matters are the stories. Young Barbara traveled west as a young girl from Virginia by covered wagon a generation before this parsonage was built, carrying a leather, sawdust and paper Mache doll in the folds of her apron so that both she and her baby doll would survive the journey. They did. If not for that, there wouldn’t be a me. This morning’s text recounts the genealogy of Jesus. Behind every name is a story that made it possible for Jesus, in the fullness of God’s time, to be born into the world with the greatest story ever told, a story so incredible that in every generation still has the power to change the world.
